Teens nowadays go through many health problems. It is quite expected as they are in a growing age, but it is advised to take proper care so that no future complications will arise. Here are few of them for you to get an idea of what you should look out for.
The most common problem that teenagers technically hate is acne. Acne is caused by bacteria which start to grow on hair follicles which have been blocked by skin cells, stopping the produced oil known as sebum from flowing to the skin. On the degree of blockage, acne can vary from pimples to black and white heads. Acne cannot be stopped as they come up because of natural reasons, but with due care it can be reduced. Reasons for acne are hormonal changes during puberty, stress, oil and grease from the scalp, excessive make up usage and even tight clothes that rub and cause irritation. Most people would let acne heal with time but if it is a serious infection consult a doctor immediately.
2. Oral problems
Oral health is very important for teens. Some common problems are misaligned or crooked teeth, missing or extra teeth, misaligned jaw etc. One of the treatments that can be done is wearing dental braces. The ideal age for braces that orthodontists believe is 10 to 14. At this age kids have not fully grown their facial bones yet hence it is quite easy to correct any dental problems. However if you are an adult, you will have fully grown facial bones which will make treatment harder and will require more than one brace or even oral surgery. So make sure you do your treatments early. Also the other simple things you could do to have good oral health is brush your teeth twice daily, visit a dentist every six months, reduce sugar filled foods etc.
Over-weight and obesity is one of the most popular causes of death in most countries. Teens are the most affected group by this disorder. There are many reasons for obesity. They include genetic factors which are passed down from generation to generation. Well, most people may not be responsible for this as it is passed down to them but they should take measures to control their weight. Metabolic factors also cause obesity. How one’s body energy is expended can vary from another. Hence we cannot pin point on what foods may lose weight or gain weight since each person may absorb food in different degrees. Lifestyles, lack of regular exercise, high sugar intake etc. are among the other causes of obesity. Teens should always take a healthy diet and do regular exercises to stay in shape since if they do not, they can be victims of high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases at an early age.
4. Eye problems
Eye health of teens is an increasing concern among parents and optometrists. With the introduction of computers, phones and tabs, teens have had the crucial need of eye care. Like dental braces, necessary eye treatment as spectacles or lenses should be worn at a young age to prevent further worsening of any eye conditions. Continued use of computers will cause eye strain which will lead to irritated eyes, heavy eye lids, headaches and even backaches. So make sure to visit an eye doctor every year to check your eye health.
These are common health issues faced by every teen. However, do not just let it go since it can lead to much serious problems. Take necessary treatment and stay healthy.
