If you have prepared a great Photoshop graphic and you want to get it printed only to find out that the dimensions are wrong, then it can turn a good day into a disaster. But there are options in Photoshop that allows you to transfer your hard work into a new document that has the right dimensions but this requires you to copy all the layers and then paste them into a new canvas. After pasting you need to readjust all the layers and objects to fit the new canvas as well. This is even worse when you have to prepare for a wrapped canvas. So here are some tips on preparing a graphic for a wrapped canvas.
Accurate details are a must
When you are preparing a graphic, any kind of graphic, you need to have the details about the sizes correct. This is imperative in cutting back the time taken for redoing everything when the sizes are wrong. Dimensions for your canvas need to be taken correctly and also the dimensions of the edge need to be calculated properly. When you are working at a labeling company and your boss wants the report covers to be done then you need the size for the edge of the report correctly.
In the case of a report or a book, you can make a different graphic to accompany that edge which can be printed as well. But for wrapped canvases you need to have the graphic set perfectly in the area that is the front of the canvas.
In most cases the higher the resolution, the better looking the end product. But some printing establishments might not have the capacity to print above a set level of resolutions. In the case of a branding company, their logos are set into a specific resolution and it is converted into an image for easy use. Printing labs usually go for 150 PPI but some can print 100 PPI or 200 PPI and some even have up till 300 PPI. Sometimes the resolution depends on the client’s and product requirements.
When you are preparing the dimensions for your initial canvas in Photoshop, then you need to make the canvas with the amount that goes to wrap around the back as well. Usually it is 1 inch but it can get up to 2 inches as well. After you know the value of the thickness of the wooden frame of the canvas then you can use grid on Photoshop to keep the space restricted.
When you are verifying details also check whether the client required Adobe RGB or regular sRGB. Depending on the preferences, your printing lab might need to change as well.
